About the Geographic Society

The history of creation and the main stages of development of the Society
The tasks of any Geographical Society were, is and will be the study of the historical and geographical heritage not only of their country, but of the whole world. It was for this purpose that the Geographic Society of Uzbekistan was created.

Based on the materials of the Society's work, we consider it legitimate to count the beginning of the history of the Geographic Society of Uzbekistan since the founding of the Turkestan department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society (IRGO) - March 12, 1897. Consequently, the history of the Geographic Society of Uzbekistan exceeds 120 years. This makes it possible to call him one of the oldest scientific societies of the republic and, obviously, one of the few whose history has not been interrupted all this time.
How did the independent department establish
By the end of the 19th century, among the geographers who worked in Turkestan, the idea of opening a regional branch of the IRGS had emerged. As a result, the Turkestan department of the IRGO was established in 1897.

On March 12, 1897, the first meeting of the Turkestan department of the IRGO was held in Tashkent. At this meeting, the “Provision on the Turkestan Department of the IRGO” was adopted, according to which the main task of the Department was to study the territory geographically and statistically, as well as to promote scientific knowledge. In total, in the first year of work of the Turkestan department of the IRGS, there were 72 members.

In 1925, the Turkestan department was transformed into the Central Asian department of the State Geographical Society.

In 1930, the Uzbekistan Branch of the State Geographical Society was established on the basis of the Central Asian Division of the State Geographical Society.

In 1940, in connection with the renaming of the State Geographical Society into the Geographical Society of the USSR, the scientific society of geographers of the republic became known as the Uzbekistan branch of the Geographical Society of the USSR.

In 1964, the Uzbekistan branch of the Geographical Society of the USSR was transformed into the Uzbekistan Geographical Society (Geographical Society of the Uzbek SSR).

After gaining independence by the republic in 1991, the professional association of geographers of our country became known as the Geographical Society of Uzbekistan.

Since 2001, the Geographical Society of Uzbekistan has been functioning as a non-governmental non-profit organization registered in this capacity by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Conclusion

For more than 120 years of its existence, the Society has experienced many changes associated with historical changes in the political and socio-economic life of the country. However, at all time stages, the Geographical Society of Uzbekistan played an important role in organizing and coordinating geographical research, publishing scientific papers of Russian geographers, and promoting geographical knowledge. As chairmen (presidents), vice-presidents and academic secretaries of the Society, the largest geographers of the republic conducted fruitful work for the benefit of geographical science and education. It can be argued that the history of the Geographical Society of Uzbekistan reflects the history of the development of geographical science in our country, the leading representatives of which have always been among the activists of the Society.
